In 2009, Ann and Murray Wilson bought a 20 acre farm in the hamlet of Oxley with plans to start a winery. They worked with a local viticulturist to identify the grape varieties to plant first - not too many and not too much of any one varietal because it was important to take it slow and learn what grew best and tastiest on their land, a former vegetable farm. The first five acres of grape vines (eleven varieties in total) were planted in May and June 2010, and two of the Wilson grandsons, David (15) and Andrew (13), spent their days staking vines, hoeing and getting to know the rhythm and terroir of the vineyard.
That summer and the next were scorchers and the vines thrived. Nonetheless, everyone was surprised to get a partial crop of Chardonnay, Regent and the HGs in the fall of 2011, a full year earlier than expected, which jump started not only the winemaking, but also renovation of a 1920 barn into the retail store, restaurant and event space. The strong, simple lines of the barn were enhanced by light from big windows, a fireplace and loft were added, and a patio and fireplace were built under large shade trees, the beginning of the beautiful and charming Oxley grounds and gardens.
The retail store opened in late July, 2012, with wine tasting available every day and a simple menu, featuring local ingredients, available on weekends. Within months, Oxley’s patio was filled daily with guests enjoying wine and a good meal.
The winery now has a second farm and 18 acres of vines. It welcomes visitors from around the globe and has expanded its offerings with new varieties, sparkling wines, and a commitment to sustainability and innovation.
Oxley is still considered a very young winery, but it has become known for its wine and food, as well as its beauty, charm, and hospitality.
